Want to be close to sustainable agriculture Malaysian Palm Oil leads the way

In 2015, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme was launched by Malaysian Government and serves as an alternative certification scheme for sustainable palm oil. The entire Malaysian palm oil industry is required to be MSPO certified. For more information, visit mpocc.org.my. By 2019, permanent forest cover will be 55.5% of Malaysia’s total land area. This is well above the 50% threshold that Malaysia had pledged at Rio Earth Summit.

By mid-2020, more than 81% of Malaysia’s total cultivated land will be MSPO certified. This includes more than 54% of smallholders in Malaysia’s palm oil industry. Today, Malaysia is a leading producer of sustainable palm oil. The Malaysian palm oil industry is ready to make the necessary efforts to maintain this position and meet the global demand for the most efficient oil crop, palm oil. Choose Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil .

Malaysia offers such a template; as a leading palm oil producer, the country deserves to have its progress towards sustainability both scrutinised and rewarded with robust trade agreements. The key to its success in slowing deforestation lies, if not exclusively, at least in part, in its nationally mandated certification scheme Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO). Unlike the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which is corporate-driven and based on voluntary compliance, the Malaysian government enforces this nationally mandated, government-backed sustainability criterion with penalties and sanctions. In addition, the MSPO places a greater focus on smallholder farmers and avoiding deforestation.

Recently, the World Resources Institute found that Malaysia’s deforestation rate has declined annually over the past four years. This could possibly be a result of Malaysia’s forest management and conservation, which includes stricter enforcement of laws and mandatory moratoriums. Another aspect in which the MSPO differs from other certification schemes is its commitment to wildlife conservation, placing it at the forefront of endangered species conservation (Malaysia has one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world). Through its ability to create a nationwide conservation landscape, MSPO provides the opportunity to protect species at particular risk. These include the pygmy elephant and the Bornean orangutan, two much-loved animals. What makes MSPO a model for global sustainability is its ability to contribute to a nationwide conservation landscape to protect the natural landscape and endemic wildlife species. The Malaysian palm oil industry, with the support of the Ministry of Primary Industries and the Ministry of Environment and Water, has effectively created a model for sustainable development.
